EF1 tornado, Montrose to Belleville, Wisconsin, June 17, 2026

From Montrose to Belleville, this EF1 tornado ran 2.7 miles across Dane County on June 17, 2026, touching down at 7:10 PM CDT and reaching 300 yards wide. It killed nobody.

Preliminary. This is NWS MKX's damage survey, filed in the Damage Assessment Toolkit as Belleville. The rating, the path and the casualties are the survey's and can change while it is revised. The Storm Prediction Center compiles the official record of 2026 from these surveys and publishes it in the spring of 2027; this page moves to that tornado's permanent address when it does.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mph

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mphthis tornado

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the survey found

Tornado began west of a farm in an open field and moved east southeast through the northern portion of Belleville. Numerous trees were snapped and uprooted. Peeled shingles and siding as well as damage to soffit and guttering on several homes. A garage one on home fell in after its roof was lifted. A garage on another home was breached at the garage door and the structure failed, peeling downwind and taking a large portion of the dwelling's roof decking. The tornado continued east southeast over a farm field damaging corn and a long water sprinkler. The end of the path east of County Road D featured additional trees snapped and uprooted before lifting in the Brooklyn Wildlife Area.

The damage survey

7 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS MKX, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF1. The highest wind the damage implies is 110 mph.

  • Starting point in an open field west of Gehin Road.
  • Farm on Gehin Road sustained damage to numerous hardwood and softwood trees. A small portion of a barn roof (metal) was peeled off.
  • Several trees snapped, large limbs downed. Shingles off roofs, damage to guttering and soffit, small sections of siding peeled off houses.
  • Significant damage to garages on two structures. One garage with bolt anchored walls had it's roof lifted and the walls collapsed in on itself. Another garage was anchored by nails and failed, peeling down wind and removing a large portion of the house's roof covering.

What the Weather Service recorded

A cluster of thunderstorms developed within the vicinity of a strong mid-upper level shortwave trough and a surface low. One supercell tracked from southeast Minnesota through northeast Iowa and into southwest Wisconsin while maintaining is strength during the late afternoon. The storm evolved into a line as it trtacked through south central Wisconsin during the early evening and produced a swath of damaging winds and three tornadoes.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. A survey can be revised, so the rating, the path and the casualties can all still change.
