F1 tornado, Marion, Virginia, May 19, 2005

This F1 tornado ran 0.6 miles across Smyth County on May 19, 2005, touching down at 1:25 AM EDT and reaching 50 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

An F1 tornado touched down briefly 6 miles south of Marion, at 0025 EST on May 20th. Many trees were snapped or uprooted. In addition, shingles were stripped from several roofs.
