EF1 tornado, Lindale, Texas, April 4, 2026

This EF1 tornado ran 2.6 miles across Smith County on April 4, 2026, touching down at 10:20 AM CDT and reaching 32 yards wide. It killed nobody.

Preliminary. This is NWS SHV's damage survey, filed in the Damage Assessment Toolkit as E of Lindale, TX. The rating, the path and the casualties are the survey's and can change while it is revised. The Storm Prediction Center compiles the official record of 2026 from these surveys and publishes it in the spring of 2027; this page moves to that tornado's permanent address when it does.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mph

    Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mphthis tornado

    Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the survey found

A mini-supercell developed and produced a short-lived, small, but intense EF1 east and northeast of Lindale, TX. The tornado began in a field just south of FM 16 W downing some small tree limbs and snapping the trunk of a pecan tree. At this same location, significant roof damage, consisting of shingle and roof decking loss, occurred to a single-family residence, resulting in a rating of EF1. The tornado downed a few more tree limbs before crossing FM 16 W. A couple of homes in the Woodcrest subdivision sustained minor shingle damage. Home security cameras in this subdivision recorded the tornado's passage.

The tornado continued northeast and crossed Legion Hills Road. In this location, a second single-family home sustained significant roof damage corresponding to a rating of EF1. A large oak tree was also uprooted on this property. The tornado continued northeast sporadically downing large tree limbs. A few more tree limbs were downed before the tornado lifted near the intersection of FM 2710 and County Road 4107.

This tornado was initially confirmed via multiple videos posted to social media by members of the public. Many thanks go to the Texas Department of Emergency Management and the Smith County Office of Emergency Management for their assistance locating damage.

What the Weather Service recorded

Despite considerable cloud cover across East Texas ahead of a cold front, relatively modest surface heating was ongoing by late morning on April 4th. A very moist air mass characterized by dew points in the upper 60s to lower 70s preceded the front. This environment supported scattered thunderstorm development along and ahead of the cold front, further aided by being on the southern fringe of the stronger mid-level winds helping propel the front. Additionally, MLCAPE values increasing to 1500+ J/kg and 25-35 knots of effective shear supported marginally organized storms capable of wind damage, flash flooding, and isolated tornadoes. However, poor mid-level lapse rates and a linear mode limited hail potential. As a result, one severe thunderstorm with quasi-supercell structure produced a brief tornado near Lindale in Smith County while a separate cluster of thunderstorms led to isolated flash flooding in Longview in Gregg County.
