EF0 tornado, Dodson to Hollis, Texas, May 31, 2022

From Dodson to Hollis, this EF0 tornado ran 2.4 miles across Harmon and Collingsworth counties on May 31, 2022, touching down at 5:54 PM CDT and reaching 180 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $50,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mphthis tornado

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mph

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

The damage survey

24 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS AMA and NWS OUN, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF0. The highest wind the damage implies is 85 mph.

  • Car reportedly spun around and shifted 15 feet.
  • Fifth wheel not anchored rolled 40 feet.
  • All large tree limbs snapped om west tree.

Survey points are preliminary and are the raw material the published rating was built from. Source: NWS Damage Assessment Toolkit.

What the Weather Service recorded

A complex of storms developed along a cold front across the southeast Texas Panhandle. A leading supercell moved through southern Collingsworth County where it exhibited strong rotation as it moved through an area with sufficient low level winds shear. This supercell then developed 2 separate tornadoes, one northwest of Dodson, Texas and the second over southern portions of Dodson. Both tornadoes were rated EF-0 with max winds of 85 MPH with tree damage and some structures damaged along the tornadoes path.

Storms developed along a stationary boundary in northwestern Oklahoma into the Texas panhandle during the afternoon and evening of the 31st. Slow storm motions led to very heavy rainfall and flooding in some locations. Intense winds close to 80 mph, large hail, and a few tornadoes were also reported.

The tornado traveled across mostly open country damaging mainly|trees along the path. Toward the end of the track, the tornado|did encounter a large sheet metal and wood pole barn and caused|the walls to collapse on the west side of the structure. This led|to a high end EF0 rating for this tornado.

The tornado touched down just southside Dodson and moved across|the south side of town before moving across open fields to the|Oklahoma border. The tornado was relatively wide and exhibited|some signs of being multi vortex on storm chaser video, but|estimated wind speeds were only high end EF0. Along the path,|there were numerous large tree limbs snapped and a few uprooted|trees. There was damage to roofs and porches of several homes and|some weak out buildings were destroyed. One unanchored travel|trailer was rolled 40 feet and destroyed as well. There were a|few isolated power poles broken, but most remained standing along|the tornado path. The tornado did cross the county line and continued into Harmon County Oklahoma for a short distance.

This tornado formed near Dodson TX (see separate entry for Collingsworth County TX in the Texas panhandle from NWS Amarillo). The tornado moved into Harmon County OK to the southeast of Dodson where two power poles were observed leaning along the state line. The tornado moved into agricultural fields in Harmon County and no additional damage was observed.

The Hollis police chief and a storm chaser observed a tornado that developed about 1 mile south-southwest of Hollis and moved east just south of town.

From NOAA NCEI's Storm Events Database, the narrative the local forecast office wrote for Storm Data.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. Tornado counts rise through the record as reporting improved, so a year in the 1950s is not comparable with one today except for the strongest tornadoes, which were always noticed.
