EF2 tornado, Lake Victor, Texas, June 12, 2014

This EF2 tornado ran 1.7 miles across Burnet County on June 12, 2014, touching down at 8:25 PM CDT and reaching 100 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $200,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

    Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

    Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mphthis tornado

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

The damage survey

8 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS EWX, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF2. The highest wind the damage implies is 121 mph.

  • Most trees down facing west. One tree came down facing to the north.
  • Little to no damage on the mobile home but several trees around the property sustained damage.
  • House was pushed 100 yards to the southwest of its original location. 5 residents took shelter in the downstairs bathroom.
  • Tree damage. End of path.

What the Weather Service recorded

An upper level low and surface cold front moved through South Central Texas producing thunderstorms. These storms produced a few tornadoes and damaging wind gusts across many areas of South Central Texas.

A thunderstorm produced a tornado that caused EF2 damage near Shady Grove. The tornado initially touched down north of FM 963 near Bar D Trail. It damaged a wind mill, a metal barn, and uprooted numerous trees. A single family house lost numerous Spanish style tile shingles from its roof. This damage was rated EF1. The tornado then moved to the southwest where there was EF2 damage to a house to the east of FM 1174 about 0.5 miles south of the intersection with FM 963. This house was moved off of its foundation about 100 yards to the south-southwest. Five people in the house sheltered in the bathroom and had only minor cuts and scrapes. The tornado then caused tree damage on the west side of FM 1174 before lifting. Maximum winds were estimated at 125 mph.
