EF0 tornado, Oklaunion, Texas, May 19, 2011

This EF0 tornado ran 0.5 miles across Wilbarger County on May 19, 2011, touching down at 7:34 PM CDT and reaching 75 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

What the Weather Service recorded

Thunderstorms developed early in the afternoon over the western portions of northern Texas. However, much of the early development moved northeast into Oklahoma. By later in the afternoon, more widespread thunderstorms developed east of the dry line. The northern tier of counties took the brunt of the active weather, with many areas reporting large hail. Vernon saw several rounds of hail, with training thunderstorms occurring for a couple of hours. Toward the end of the event, a brief tornado occurred over far northeast Wilbarger county, just south of the Red River. No damage occurred with the tornado. The severe activity had crossed into Oklahoma by mid evening.

A storm chaser east of Davidson OK observed and photographed a partially rain-wrapped tornado to his south-southwest, estimated to be just south of the Red River in far northeastern Wilbarger County Texas. This tornado produced no known damage.
