EF0 tornado, Crane, Texas, May 5, 2008

This EF0 tornado ran 2.7 miles across Crane County on May 5, 2008, touching down at 5:59 PM CDT and reaching 50 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

The combination of strong west winds behind the dryline and moist southeast surface flow resulted in strong storms throughout the area. Initial thunderstorm development occurred along this boundary, which was located from Carlsbad, southward through Fort Stockton. Additional upper level atmospheric support was provided by a passing upper level disturbance. The strength of thunderstorms was increased by having a moderately unstable and high wind shear environment.

Local law enforcement relayed a trained spotter report of a tornado west of Crane. No damage was reported.
