F2 tornado, Wheeler, Texas, April 10, 2001

This F2 tornado ran 6.0 miles across Wheeler County on April 10, 2001, touching down at 12:17 AM CDT and reaching 200 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $150,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

Severe thunderstorms producing large hail...damaging winds...and tornadoes occurred across the western Texas panhandle during the early evening hours and then moved east and northeast across the central and eastern Texas panhandle during the late evening hours.

An official storm damage survey was made of the estimated tornado path length and width. A home and farm equipment were severely damaged. Several large trees and power poles were also knocked down. Several areas of non-tornadic downburst winds were also assessed...primarily in the west and southwest areas of Wheeler county.
