F1 tornado, Lynchburg to Center Grove, Tennessee, May 31, 2004

From Lynchburg to Center Grove, this F1 tornado ran 6.0 miles across Moore and Franklin counties on May 31, 2004, touching down at 1:17 AM CDT and reaching 150 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $10,000 of property damage.

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. F4207 to 260 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

A F1 tornado touched down just east of Lynchburg and moved eastward out of Moore county and into Franklin county toward Tims Ford Lake. The tornado remained in rural areas with the damage confined to trees that were snapped and uprooted.

A F1 tornado moved eastward out of Moore County across parts of Tims Ford Lake and into northwest Franklin County before dissipating near Center Grove. While most of the damage was confined to trees, a few boats were overturned in Tims Ford Lake.
