F1 tornado, Brownlee, Nebraska, June 4, 1999

This F1 tornado ran 5.0 miles across Cherry County on June 4, 1999, touching down at 8:35 PM MDT and reaching 50 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $50,000 of property damage.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. F4207 to 260 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

Storm chasers and the general public observed the tornado as it moved across open country.

This was a continuation of the Thomas county tornado that initially touched down 3 miles north north west of Thedford and traveled into Cherry county.

The tornado moved across open rangeland southeast of Brownlee with minor damage to fences and trees.

The tornado touched down west of highway 83, crossed the highway and destroyed a scale house at a cattle handling facility.

The tornado was on the ground for a short time and moved across open rangeland.
