EF0 tornado, Appleton City, Missouri, May 11, 2011

This EF0 tornado ran 2.7 miles across St. Clair County on May 11, 2011, touching down at 8:35 PM CDT and reaching 50 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $8,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

An upper level low over western Kansas combined with a cold front moved into the region and produced severe thunderstorms. Numerous severe storms and a few supercells produced very large hail and high wind gusts as the front moved through the region.

A National Weather Service storm survey determined that an EF-0 tornado touched down near the western edge of Appleton City and continued intermittently to near 2.5 miles northeast of town. The tornado downed several trees and caused minor shingle and roof damage to a few homes.
