EF2 tornado, Flaming to Gary, Minnesota, August 28, 2016

From Flaming to Gary, this EF2 tornado ran 9.6 miles across Norman County on August 28, 2016, touching down at 9:04 PM CDT and reaching 400 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

What the Weather Service recorded

By the early evening of August 28th, an area of surface low pressure had moved into southwest North Dakota, with a cold front extending north and south of it. To the east, a warm front stretched from northwest to southeast Minnesota. Between the cold and warm fronts, temperatures were in the low 80s with dew points in the low 70s. Thunderstorms broke out along the warm front over Kittson County, then they expanded southeastward during the evening. The storms produced tornadoes, hail, and heavy rain.

This multi-vortex tornado was observed from several locations near the Polk/Norman county line, before it became rain-wrapped. It tracked to the southeast in a jagged and intermittent fashion, with peak winds estimated at 115 mph. Hundreds of trees were uprooted, snapped, or damaged along the track. A barn was destroyed and power poles snapped at one locale, while house roofs and exterior walls were damaged at two others.
