F1 tornado, Clarence, Iowa, July 20, 2003

This F1 tornado ran 2.4 miles across Cedar County on July 20, 2003, touching down at 11:24 PM CDT and reaching 440 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $1.0 million of property damage.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. F4207 to 260 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

Tornado developed 2.4 miles Northwest of Clarence near 120th Street. The tornado moved southeast for 2.4 miles and lifted 1.6 miles North Northeast of Clarence near Oxford Junction Road. Every farm along the path sustained significant damage to crops with 5 to 6 barns destroyed. A grain wagon was thrown a quarter of a mile and debris was scattered for more than one half mile.

Strong F1...winds estimated around 110 mph.
