F1 tornado, Avery, Iowa, May 9, 1996

This F1 tornado ran 1.5 miles across Monroe County on May 9, 1996, touching down at 12:36 AM CDT and reaching 60 yards wide. It killed nobody and injured 2, and did $380,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. F4207 to 260 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

Strong thunderstorms fired as mentioned above in central Iowa. The main feature with the storms was the heavy rain. One of the storms became severe and produced a tornado near the town of Avery in Monroe County. It caused considerable damage. There were numerous reports of touchdown northeast of Albia. The tornado destroyed at least one trailer, several sheds, many large trees. It also damaged numerous houses, trailers, propane tanks, and fences. The tornado also damaged electrical wires cutting off electricity to most of the east half of the county, including Albia, for about 2 hours. There were two injuries reported with the tornado. They were relatively minor. A couple was in the trailer that was destroyed by the tornado. The wife was 8 months pregnant and gave birth the next day to a healty baby. It was fortunate that thought the trailer was destroyed, they both escaped with minor injuries. The actual path of the tornado was from a little northwest of Avery, tracking southeast for about 1 1/2 miles.
