The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mphthis tornado

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mph

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

The damage survey

5 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS ILX and NWS LSX, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF0. The highest wind the damage implies is 85 mph.

  • Brief tornado touchdown in a field. Two spotters reported it, one with a picture. The tornado did not hit any damage indicators this it will be labeled as an EF-unknown.
  • Crops are flattened in a convergent pattern.
  • Damage in corn field. End of tornado

What the Weather Service recorded

A strong cold front moved through the region triggering showers and storms. Some of the storms produced damaging winds and a couple of tornadoes.

Low pressure tracked from near Kansas City on the morning of July 15th to southern Lake Michigan by midnight on July 16th. The low interacted with an unstable and very moist environment to produce a Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) over eastern Kansas into Missouri, which then pushed into west-central Illinois by the mid to late morning of July 15th. Several rounds of convection moved across the Illinois River Valley through the afternoon, producing heavy rain and isolated wind damage. The heaviest rainfall of 5 to 7 inches was focused across Tazewell, Woodford, and far eastern Peoria counties where significant flash flooding occurred. In addition, 5 weak tornadoes touched down...including 2 in Tazewell County, 1 in McLean County, 1 in Morgan County, and 1 in Montgomery County which then crossed into southern Sangamon County. Minor damage was reported with some of the tornadoes: however, no injuries or deaths occurred.

A tornado developed about 3 miles north-northwest of Farmersville, Illinois, near the intersection of Rovey Lane and East 1st Road. A few storm chasers captured video of the tornado as it moved northeast and then north toward the Montgomery and Sangamon County line. On video the tornado appeared to be multivortex and violent, yet damage in the St. Louis county warning area was limited to a few broken tree branches, flattened corn and the partial destruction of a small outbuilding. Therefore, it was rated as an EF-0 in Montgomery County with a path length of 3.89 miles and a max path width of 300 yards. The tornado continued north into Sangamon County (WFO Central IL CWA) before lifting and dissipating about 2.4 miles south of Divernon. Overall, the tornado was rated EF0 with a total path length of 4.24 miles and a max path width of 300 yards. No deaths or injuries were reported.

This is a continuation of a tornado that touched down in the National Weather Service St. Louis County Warning Area (CWA) in Montgomery County at 5:18 PM CDT. The tornado crossed into the National Weather Service Central Illinois CWA in far southern Sangamon County at 5:25 PM CDT. Damage occurred to approximately 15 acres of a cornfield before the tornado dissipated 2.7 miles south of Divernon at 5:26 PM CDT.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. Tornado counts rise through the record as reporting improved, so a year in the 1950s is not comparable with one today except for the strongest tornadoes, which were always noticed.
