   Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

   Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

   Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

   Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

5. EF4166 to 200 mph

   Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

6. EF5over 200 mph

   Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

7. Unrated

   The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

The evening of Wednesday, June 22 brought a favorable setup for tornadoes across northern Illinois. There were approximately 3 supercells which brought numerous tornadoes to the NWS Chicago CWA. NWS ground survey data combined with aerial photography, radar and satellite imagery, and detailed reports from trained storm spotters have helped to determine that 15 tornadoes occurred across the NWS Chicago County Warning Area.

The tornado started near 787 Meridian Rd and moved northeast crossing Highway 10 (Shaw Rd). Along the way, a house lost a portion of the roof and there were trees snapped and corn flattened. After crossing Highway 10 and continuing northeast for another one half mile, the tornado changed direction and then started moving southeast, crossing Highway 10 again. There was a wide swatch of uprooted and snapped trees, and the tornado was confirmed by a storm chaser. Peak winds were estimated at 110 mph, and max width was 300 yards. (Tornado 1 of 15).

The county was under a tornado watch, issued at 23:11 UTC and running to 02:43 UTC.
