F1 tornado, Aroma Park, Illinois, May 24, 2006

This F1 tornado ran 1.5 miles across Kankakee County on May 24, 2006, touching down at 5:20 PM CDT and reaching 50 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $70,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. F4207 to 260 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

The tornado began near Sugar Island at 6000 South and about 3000 East and appears to have ended near 5500 South and 4500 East. The tornado path was embedded in a half mile wide swath of tree limb damage. In the narrow tornado path, more concentrated damage occurred. A large healthy tree was uprooted and other trees had large limbs blown down. Barn roofs were ripped off. A large machine shed was completely destroyed. Wood supports were pulled from the ground, two by fours were snapped and a large steel beam was thrown into a nearby barn. Pieces of metal roof and siding were blown a mile downstream. A camper was rolled over.
