F2 tornado, Wheeler, Illinois, April 16, 2006

This F2 tornado ran 1.5 miles across Jasper County on April 16, 2006, touching down at 5:18 PM CDT and reaching 150 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

A tornado formed just north of 700th Avenue in Effingham County, on the Effingham/Jasper County line. It produced minor tree and barn damage to a farm at this location, and tracked to the northeast. The tornado struck a mobile home just inside the Jasper County line, and completely destroyed the home. The debris was blown several hundred yards into a field, with the home's refrigerator blown 1/4 mile into a field. The debris from the mobile home struck an adjacent automobile, and crushed the roof. The car was also pushed about 15 feet in the direction of impact. The tornado continued northeast, causing significant tree damage, and minor damage to a few homes and outbuildings.
