This F1 tornado ran 0.8 miles across McHenry County on May 19, 1996, touching down at 12:00 AM CDT and reaching 50 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

What the Weather Service recorded

A small tornado touched down briefly between Union and Marengo in McHenry County. Two to three foot diameter trees were uprooted. As many as 12 to 24 outbuildings were damaged or destroyed. Fences were torn up and debris was found 3/4 mile away.
