   Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

   Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

   Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

4. EF3136 to 165 mph

   Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

5. EF4166 to 200 mph

   Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

6. EF5over 200 mph

   Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

7. Unrated

   The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

A strong cold front associated with a deep upper-level trough moved through the region. A line of strong to severe thunderstorms ahead of the cold front swept into northwest Georgia during the afternoon and progressed southeastward across north and central Georgia through the late afternoon into the evening before weakening and pushing into south Georgia and the Carolinas during the early morning hours. Numerous reports of damaging thunderstorm winds and a few isolated tornadoes were received.

A National Weather Service survey team found that an EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 90 mph and a maximum path width of 100 yards began along the Flint River on the Meriwether-Upson County line south-southeast of Woodbury. The tornado traveled about a third of a mile along the north shore of the river in Upson County with no damage on the Meriwether County side of the river. Approximately 100 trees and several power poles were snapped or blown down. A camper was blown over and a boat was blown into a tree. A home along the river was knocked off of its stilts and destroyed by a large tree falling on it. At least one other home sustained damage from falling trees.
