EF1 tornado, Lauderdale Lakes to Coral Spgs, Florida, August 2, 2011

From Lauderdale Lakes to Coral Spgs, this EF1 tornado ran 2.1 miles across Broward County on August 2, 2011, touching down at 5:03 PM EDT and reaching 90 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $180,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

Numerous late afternoon thunderstorms developed over SE Florida. A tornado formed near the intersection of two thunderstorm cells in the Tamarac and North Lauderdale area of Broward County.

A tornado with estimated maximum winds of 85-90 mph, or on very low end of EF1 scale, moved through portions of Tamarac and North Lauderdale north of McNab RD and east of University DR. The path length was about 2 miles and max path width 90 yards. Most damage was to roofing material and vegetation, with the roof partially peeled off on home and frame windows broken and blown from a couple of others. About 30 homes were damaged.
