EF1 tornado, Berlin to Simcoe, Alabama, March 28, 2021

From Berlin to Simcoe, this EF1 tornado ran 2.1 miles across Cullman County on March 28, 2021, touching down at 5:38 AM CDT and reaching 100 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

A strong to severe line of thunderstorms, some with embedded supercellular storms, roared east across north Alabama from shortly after Midnight through around 6 am LST. Damaging winds were reported at numerous locations, including a narrow swath of damage with winds up to 80 mph in the town of Russellville in Franklin County, a short track EF-1 tornado in Fairview in Cullman County, and a narrow swath of damage with winds up to 85 mph in the town of Fyffe in DeKalb County.

A tornado touched down southwest of the Fairview community in Cullman County, snapping trees near the intersection of CR 747 and 1621. From there, the tornado moved northeast and continued snapping numerous hard and softwood trees along the path. Along CR 1634, the tornado destroyed a couple of farm outbuildings and was at its widest point near this location. A large swath of trees in a grove were snapped and uprooted to the northeast of the outbuilding damage. Damage continued as the tornado moved northeast, snapping trees, stopping short of County Road 1651. This was the end of the tornado path.
