F0 tornado, Carrollton to Gordo, Alabama, May 9, 1998

From Carrollton to Gordo, this F0 tornado ran 2.2 miles across Pickens County on May 9, 1998, touching down at 7:09 PM CDT and reaching 50 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $50,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. F2113 to 157 mph

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. F3158 to 206 mph

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. F4207 to 260 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

A weak tornado touched down in a wooded area south of Gordo producing damage along a 6.5 mile track crossing from Pickens County into Tuscaloosa County. Damage was primarily in the form of downed trees though several structures sustained minor damage. This tornado apparently came out of the same thunderstorm that produced the weak tornado on the north side of Carrollton earlier. This tornado damage path also crossed the damage path that occurred with the F3 tornado on April 8, 1998.

A weak tornado touched down northwest of Carrollton and uprooted and snapped several trees. The tornado actually moved across the Pickens County Hospital on the north side of Carrollton on SR 17. Minor roof damage was done at the hospital but there were a number of trees down.
