A line of strong thunderstorms developed over the lower Rio Grande Valley and quickly became severe as it progressed eastward across Cameron County. Within the line, a very notable downburst developed just ahead of Bayview and caused destructive straight-line winds. Widespread tree damage was surveyed, in addition to the destruction of a sunroom on the south side of Bayview. Also, several large trees were uprooted with numerous large tree branches down.

A cluster of potent thunderstorms developed in northeastern Mexico and moved north into Cameron County early Sunday morning. Within this cluster of storms, a strong linear downburst crossed South Padre Island from 1:24 AM CST to 1:40 AM CST. The South Padre Island Police Department reported downed power lines in between the paralleling Padre Blvd and Laguna Blvd on South Padre Island, and at one point all of South Padre Island had lost power due to 31 transmission poles that were taken down by the wind.

Peak winds of 56 knots (Storm Force) was recorded at the Brazos Santiago monitoring station along the South Padre Island jetty at 142 AM CST (242 AM CDT). Gale to Storm Force gusts were recorded between 136 AM and 206 AM CST (236 and 306 AM CDT), associated with a rapidly developing squall line between Bayview and Boca Chica Beach early on the 21st. No known damage to watercraft was noted, but the near 70 mph gusts produced damage to power poles on South Padre Island during the same time.

Peak winds of 49 knots (Storm Force) were recorded at the South Padre Island Coast Guard Station at 142 AM CST (242 AM CDT). A period of Gale to Storm Force gusts was observed from a rapidly developing squall line between 136 AM and 2 AM CST (236 and 3 AM CDT). No damage was reported, so far, to any water craft at the station or in Laguna Madre.

What this means

A best track is the record a warning agency settles on after the storm, not what it said at the time: position, maximum sustained wind and central pressure every six hours, revised against every observation that came in later. Category is the Saffir-Simpson scale, which runs from Category 1 at 64 kt to Category 5 at 137 kt and reads wind only, so it says nothing about surge or rain. Accumulated cyclone energy adds up the square of the wind through the storm's life, so it counts strength and duration together.
