Decaying thunderstorms located just south of a mesoscale convective vortex produced an intense downburst in extreme southwest Cottle County. A Texas Tech University West Texas Mesonet site located ten miles west-southwest of Paducah measured severe winds from 1725 CST to 1735 CST with a peak gust of 96 mph recorded at 1730 CST. Despite the ferocious winds, only one power pole was downed in the area. Although NWS Lubbock radar indicated only marginal storm intensities during this time, the high winds were deemed legitimate based on the fact that cable ties to the mesonet tower were snapped. Farther southeast, a NWS COOP observer about ten miles south of Paducah reported a couple large tree limbs had snapped and damaged a fence.

A small EF-0 tornado was seen on video from a school campus in Sweet Home. The survey concluded that the small tornado began just down the road from the school on FM 531 and then traveled northwest hitting the school playground area at approximately 5:02 PM. The video showed the small tornado moving through the playground damaging the playground and the school gymnasium door. The tornado then moved northwest behind the school and into an open field behind a nearby church. The tornado crossed County Road 378 and produced some minor tree damage before dissipating near FM 318. Special thanks go out to Sweet Home Independent School District and KSAT-12 TV in San Antonio for providing information and video of this tornado event.

What this means

A best track is the record a warning agency settles on after the storm, not what it said at the time: position, maximum sustained wind and central pressure every six hours, revised against every observation that came in later. Category is the Saffir-Simpson scale, which runs from Category 1 at 64 kt to Category 5 at 137 kt and reads wind only, so it says nothing about surge or rain. Accumulated cyclone energy adds up the square of the wind through the storm's life, so it counts strength and duration together.
