A 40 year old male drown while attempting to rescue his children who were being pulled seaward by a strong rip current. The man was found floating in the water unconscious about a quarter mile away. Witnesses tried to perform CPR, and the man was taken to a local hospital, but didn't survive. The children were rescued by surfers.

Record flooding occurred along the Susquehanna River near Waverly, NY between September 7th and September 12th, 2011. The river crested at 26.67 feet at 4:15 PM on September 8th as determined by a USGS high water mark survey. This surpassed the previous record of 22.52 feet set during the June 2006 flood.

A record flood occurred at the Binghamton/Washington St. bridge river gauge in Binghamton, NY. The crest was 25.71 feet at 3:00 PM on September 8, 2011. The flood waters topped the flood protection walls and levees, causing extensive flooding throughout the downtown areas of Binghamton. This surpassed the previous record of 25.0 feet set during the June 2006 flood.

Catastrophic flash flooding occurred in Bradford county. Routes 220 and 187 and numerous county roads were closed and severely damaged. Several towns were not accessible from the flash flooding. Students were unable to leave Northeast Bradford High School and evacuations took place in several communities.

The river crested at Wilkes-Barre at 42.66 feet around 7:00 AM on September 8, 2011 as determined by a USGS high water mark survey. The previous record crest was 40.91 feet which dates back to the June 1972 Hurricane Agnes flood.

What this means
A best track is the record a warning agency settles on after the storm, not what it said at the time: position, maximum sustained wind and central pressure every six hours, revised against every observation that came in later. Category is the Saffir-Simpson scale, which runs from Category 1 at 64 kt to Category 5 at 137 kt and reads wind only, so it says nothing about surge or rain. Accumulated cyclone energy adds up the square of the wind through the storm's life, so it counts strength and duration together.
