...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK IN EFFECT THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING...

* WHAT...Numerous strong, dangerous rip currents expected in the
surf zone, along with breaking waves of 4 to 5 feet.

* WHERE...Southern Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin,
Coastal Volusia and Northern Brevard Counties.

* WHEN...Through Sunday evening.

* IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away
from shore into deeper water. Large breaking waves can knock you
off your feet, and make you even more susceptible to becoming
caught in the seaward pull of a rip current.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...While rip currents will be present all day,
the threat will be highest between 12 noon and sunset today.
Because of the combination of rip currents and swells, weaker
swimmers may want to stay out of the water today and Sunday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and
piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags and
signs.

If you are a weak swimmer, you may want to stay out of the surf
this weekend. If you decide to enter the ocean, swim only within
sight of a lifeguard. Never swim alone! If caught in the seaward
pull of a rip current, do not panic! Instead, relax and float.
Don't swim directly against the current! If your are able, swim
at an angle away from the current until you feel the seaward pull
weaken, then swim toward shore. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.
