...BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM EST THIS MORNING
THROUGH SUNSET...

* WHAT...A strong southward flowing longshore current along with
  building, choppy surf are expected to develop in the surf zone,
  especially this afternoon.

* WHERE...Southern Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, 
  Coastal Volusia and Northern Brevard Counties.

* WHEN...From 10 AM EST this morning through sunset.

* IMPACTS...Increasingly rough surf will make conditions 
  hazardous for swimmers. Rip currents will also develop at 
  breaches in the sand bar, mainly during the afternoon.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Weak swimmers may not want to enter the
  water above their knees. Never dry to swim directly against a 
  longshore current.
  

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.
