The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a * Flood Watch for a portion of central New York, including the following counties, Jefferson and Lewis. * From Sunday morning through Tuesday morning * The combination of rain and snow melt over the past couple days has caused levels to rise on the Black River and its tributaries. As these higher flows move down the basin there is a risk of flooding along the Black River between Lyons Falls and Watertown. The best chance for flooding is at typically vulnerable locations which includes the flats along the Black River near Lowville. Also, its important to note that crests will be reached much sooner in the Lowville area than in Watertown. Highest flows can be expected on Sunday in the Lowville area and on Monday near Watertown. Crests at Watertown will be right near the flood stage of 10 feet. Flooding is only expected to impact typically vulnerable locations along the Black River, remaining in the minor flood category. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings.
