The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for dangerous swimming conditions, which is in effect from this evening through late Thursday night. * HIGH WAVE ACTION EXPECTED * STRONG RIP CURRENTS EXPECTED... * STRONG LONGSHORE CURRENTS EXPECTED...Moving from north to south * STRONG STRUCTURAL CURRENTS EXPECTED...Especially on the north sides of piers and breakwalls. * OVERVIEW/POTENTIAL IMPACTS...Southwest winds this afternoon will rapidly shift to the north-northeast this evening, with waves building to 3 to 6 feet. Waves will subside to around 2 to 3 feet by Friday morning. Wave angles of approach range from 30 to 70 degrees relative to shore, with periods of 5 to 6 seconds. This is especially favorable for a strong southward flowing longshore current and strong structural currents on the north sides of piers and breakwalls. Rip currents are also likely, particularly at beaches in southern Berrien County and La Porte County. Those visiting the beaches should stay out of the water, and steer clear of the pier. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Life threatening waves and currents are expected at the beaches. People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water.
