For the High Rip Current Risk, dangerous rip currents expected. * WHERE...Coastal Brunswick County. * WHEN...Through Friday evening. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Life threatening rip currents are likely in the surf zone. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs. If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain calm, do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly. 1 AM EDT SATURDAY...
* WHAT...One to two feet of inundation above ground level
expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal
waterways.
* WHERE...The lower Cape Fear River including downtown
Wilmington.
* WHEN...From 8 PM this evening to 1 AM EDT Saturday.
* IMPACTS...Water as deep as a foot covering potions of Battleship
Road and USS North Carolina Road with 12 to 18 inches of water
over the lowest spots on each road. Water over six inches deep
along River Road about a quarter mile south of The Cape
Boulevard. Water covering more than two blocks of Water Street
near Market Street with as much as a foot of water in the center
of Water Street just south of Market Street.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be
closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of
unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone
property.
