...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM EDT THIS EVENING...

The National Weather Service in New York NY has issued a High Rip
Current Risk, which is in effect until 9 PM EDT this evening.

* LOCATIONS...The ocean beaches of Suffolk County, including but
  not limited to Gilgo State Park, Robert Moses State Park, Smith
  Point, Cupsogue Beach, Ditch Plains, and Hither Hills State 
  Park. 

* SURF AND RIP CURRENT RISK...High, with surf heights 3 to 4 feet
  and occasionally as high as 5 feet. Numerous rescues have
  already been made at Smith Point this morning. 

* TIMING...Into this evening. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars and near structures such as groins, jetties, and piers.
Talk to lifeguards and beach officials to learn about any surf
hazards and heed their advice. Pay attention to flags and posted
signs and swim in life guarded areas.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float, and do not swim against the current.  If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.

High Rip Current Risk.

Although the high risk of rip currents has ended, a moderate risk
will continue at area beaches through Saturday. Talk to 
lifeguards and beach officials to learn about any surf hazards and
heed their advice. Pay attention to flags and posted signs and 
swim in life guarded areas.
