...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK TODAY AT THE EASTERN LONG ISLAND OCEAN
BEACHES...

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a High Rip
Current Risk, which is in effect through this evening.

* LOCATIONS...The ocean beaches of Suffolk County on Long Island,  
  including but not limited to Gilgo State Park, Robert Moses 
  State Park, Smith Point, Cupsogue Beach, Ditch Plains, and 
  Hither Hills State Park. 

* TIMING...Through this evening.

* SURF ZONE IMPACTS...Very strong rip currents will be dangerous 
  to anyone who enters the surf.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars and near structures such as groins, jetties, and piers.
Talk to lifeguards and beach officials to learn about any surf
hazards and heed their advice. Pay attention to flags and posted
signs and swim in life guarded areas.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float, and do not swim against the current.  If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.
