...ANOTHER POTENTIALLY HISTORIC MID APRIL WINTER STORM WEDNESDAY
NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT...

.A Blizzard Warning remains in effect northwest of a line from 
Redwood Falls to Saint Cloud. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect 
for most of the rest of central and southern Minnesota and western
Wisconsin.

A potentially historic winter storm is expected starting
Wednesday evening lasting into early Friday morning. Confidence
is high that a band of heavy snow will reach central and western
Minnesota Wednesday evening and continue through Thursday,
tapering off in intensity gradually Thursday night. Snowfall
rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will be possible at times.
Periods of mixed precipitation in the form of rain, snow, and
sleet are expected along and south of a line from New Ulm, to the
Twin Cities metro, to Rice Lake, Wisconsin. There is still
considerable uncertainty where this transition zone will set up.
A tighter gradient in snowfall totals than currently forecast
should be expected along this zone.

Winds will increase Wednesday night with gusts of 45 to 55 mph by
Thursday. This will lead to widespread blowing and drifting snow
and blizzard conditions across west central Minnesota. Travel
could become nearly impossible in this area by Thursday.

.A Blizzard Warning remains in effect northwest of a line from
Redwood Falls to Saint Cloud. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect
for much of central Minnesota. A Winter Weather Advisory is in
effect for portions of Southern Minnesota, east central Minnesota,
and West Central Wisconsin.

A major mid April winter storm is expected starting this evening 
lasting into early Friday morning. Confidence is high that a band 
of heavy snow will reach western and central Minnesota tonight 
and continue through Thursday night, tapering off in intensity 
gradually Friday morning. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour
will be possible at times. Periods of mixed precipitation in the 
form of rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet are expected along 
and south of a line from Redwood Falls, to the Saint Cloud, to 
Ladysmith, Wisconsin. There is medium confidence in where this 
transition zone will set up. A tighter gradient in snowfall 
totals than currently forecast should be expected along this zone.

Winds will increase tonight with gusts of 45 to 55 mph by 
Thursday. This will produce areas of blowing snow over much of 
central and southern Minnesota into western Wisconsin. Blizzard 
conditions are likely across west central Minnesota. Travel could
become nearly impossible in this area by Thursday.

THROUGH THE EARLY AFTERNOON...

.A Blizzard Warning remains in effect northwest of a line from
Redwood Falls to Saint Cloud. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect
for much of central Minnesota. A Winter Weather Advisory is in
effect for portions of Southern Minnesota, east central
Minnesota, and West Central Wisconsin. In addition, a Winter
Weather Advisory has been expanded farther east and north across
portions of southwestern and south central Minnesota through this
afternoon. 

A major mid April winter storm will affect Minnesota and west
central Wisconsin through Friday. 

An initial band of snow, heavy at times, will gradually shift 
northward through southern Minnesota this morning, and into the 
afternoon. Locally 3 to 6 inches of snow will fall in the advisory
area through the afternoon, before tapering off to light snow, 
mixed with sleet and rain at time along the Iowa border toward 6 
pm. 

Slowly, this band of snow will reach western and central 
Minnesota tonight and continue through Thursday night, tapering 
off in intensity gradually Friday morning. Snowfall rates of 1 to 
2 inches per hour will be possible at times. Periods of mixed 
precipitation in the form of rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet 
are expected along and south of a line from Redwood Falls, to the 
Saint Cloud, to Ladysmith, Wisconsin. There is medium confidence 
in where this transition zone will set up. A tighter gradient in 
snowfall totals than currently forecast should be expected along 
this zone.

Winds will increase tonight with gusts of 45 to 55 mph by
Thursday. This will produce areas of blowing snow over much of
central and southern Minnesota into western Wisconsin. Blizzard
conditions are likely across west central Minnesota. Travel could
become nearly impossible in this area by Thursday.

...MAJOR CHANGE TO WINTER STORM...

...SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW SPREADING NORTHWARD ACROSS SOUTHERN
MINNESOTA THIS AFTERNOON....

.A Blizzard Warning remains in effect northwest of a line from 
Redwood Falls to Saint Cloud. A Winter Storm Warning is now in
effect for much of southern and central Minnesota, including the
Twin Cities metro area. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in 
effect for portions of south central Minnesota, and West Central 
Wisconsin. 

An initial band of snow, heavy at times, will gradually shift 
northward through southern Minnesota, and into central Minnesota,
as well as portions of west central Wisconsin this afternoon. 
Locally 3 to 6 inches of snow will fall before tapering off some
in the late afternoon and early evening. However, more snow,
heavy at times, will redevelop across Minnesota, and into west 
central Wisconsin later this evening, and overnight. Based on 
snowfall totals increasing from Fairmont, northeast to the Twin 
Cities and portions of west central Wisconsin, the Winter Weather 
Advisory has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning. The new 
Winter Storm Warning is west of a line from Fairmont to Faribault 
to Hastings in Minnesota, to Prescott, to Rice Lake in Wisconsin.

Slowly, the band of heavy snow this afternoon will reach western 
and central Minnesota by late this afternoon. There could be a
brief period late this afternoon, and into the evening where
snowfall intensity is less, but redevelopment of heavy snow is
likely later this evening, and into the overnight hours across
most of southern Minnesota, with the exception along the Iowa
border where more sleet and rain will become mixed in. 

Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will be possible at 
times, especially this afternoon. Periods of mixed precipitation 
in the form of rain, snow, and sleet are expected along and south 
of a line from Redwood Falls, to the Saint Cloud, to Ladysmith, 
Wisconsin starting Thursday morning as much warmer air surges 
northward. 

Winds will increase tonight with gusts of 45 to 55 mph by
Thursday. This will produce areas of blowing snow over much of
central and southern Minnesota into western Wisconsin. Blizzard
conditions are likely across west central Minnesota. Travel could
become nearly impossible in this area by Thursday.

.A Blizzard Warning remains in effect west of a line from Redwood
Falls to Saint Cloud. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect

An initial band of snow will continue through the early overnight
hours across central Minnesota into northern Wisconsin. However, 
another band of heavy snow will redevelop across southern
Minnesota around midnight and lift north through the night,
reaching central Minnesota and northern Wisconsin early Thursday
morning. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will be 
possible with that band. Warmer air aloft will turn the snow to
sleet Thursday morning along and south of a line from Redwood 
Falls to Saint Cloud to Mora. The sleet could turn to rain by
afternoon across southern and eastern Minnesota into western
Wisconsin, while heavy snow continues across western Minnesota.

Widespread thunderstorm activity across southwestern Minnesota

Additional snow accumulations through Friday of 8 to 13 inches

...MAJOR WINTER STORM WINDING DOWN TONIGHT...

.A Blizzard Warning remains in effect tonight for locations along
and west a line from Granite Falls to Alexandria. A Winter Storm 
Warning remains in effect north of a line from Redwood Falls to
Hastings in MN, over to Eau Claire, WI. Winter storm warnings and
advisories have been canceled for locations in southern MN south 
of a line from New Ulm to Red Wing where wintry precipitation has
ended and road conditions have significantly improved.

At 7 pm, snow had shifted to northern Minnesota and eastern South
Dakota. This South Dakota snow band will work back into western
Minnesota overnight, with wind gusts again picking up to near 35
mph, which will continue to create blizzard conditions in far
western Minnesota through the night. Across the rest of the
warning area, a mix of rain, freezing rain, and light snow will 
continue to lead to icy road conditions into Friday morning.
