The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for very rough and choppy surf, and a strong southward flowing longshore current which is in effect through this afternoon. * HAZARDS...Large breaking waves of 5 to 7 feet in the surf zone. Rip Currents will also be present, and a long shore current running from north to south will be especially strong. * TIMING...These hazards will be present all day, with the surf particularly rough through the early afternoon high tide around 2 PM. * LOCATION...The entire central Florida Atlantic surf zone from Flagler Beach to Jupiter Inlet. * POTENTIAL IMPACTS...Rough surf and large breaking waves can knock you down and make you susceptible to seaward flowing rip currents. The long shore current will carry swimmers rapidly south and away from where they entered the water. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Never try to swim directly against a long shore current. If you feel yourself being push southward in the surf, swim at an angle toward shore, but also toward the south, and not north. && $$
