Evening Into Sunday...

.Wintry precipitation will spread across Iowa tonight bringing
areas of freezing drizzle and freezing rain to much of Iowa
through Saturday morning. Freezing drizzle and freezing rain will
mix with some light snow across portions of west central
northwest Iowa through the day Saturday. Heavy snow and blizzard
conditions are expected to develop across west central and
northern Iowa Saturday evening through Sunday with wintry mixed
precipitation and patchy blowing snow further south and east.
There is still some uncertainty in snow amounts with a tight
gradient on the north and south sides of a heavier band of snow,
especially in the area along a rain/snow mix line across portions
of central Iowa including the Des Moines metro area. A small
shift in the track of the system will change the area of the
heaviest snow axis which could lead to an expansion of the area
with blizzard conditions as the track becomes more defined into
Saturday. As colder air moves into Iowa Saturday evening,
precipitation will change over to all snow, potentially heavy at
times. Wet areas may quickly freeze Saturday evening creating icy
travel conditions. Strong and gusty northwest to west winds to
increase across the state Saturday night through Sunday causing
areas of blowing snow and blizzard conditions especially in rural
areas.

.Freezing rain and a wintry mix is expanding over much of central
Iowa and will continue through Saturday over portions of northern
Iowa. A transition to rain will occur over the south by Saturday 
morning. Late in the afternoon Saturday, heavy snow and blizzard 
conditions will develop across western, parts of central and 
northern Iowa continuing through Sunday. Wintry mixed precipitation
and patchy blowing snow will occur further south and east. Travel
may become difficult to very dangerous over portions of the state
Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday morning. 

There remains some uncertainty as to where the heaviest snow band
will set up Saturday afternoon and evening as the main storm 
crosses Iowa. The transition zone to heavier snow amounts cuts 
across central Iowa and will extend from southwest Iowa to 
northeast Iowa just northwest of the Ames to Des Moines corridor.
A small shift in the track of the storm will greatly impact snow 
amounts and the extent of blizzard conditions over the region 
Saturday evening and night. Some adjustments to the forecast are 
possible, even on Saturday as the storm is nearly upon the area.

.Freezing rain will persist until around 9 AM today for areas 
north of Interstate 80. Temperatures will warm enough to change 
some areas across central Iowa, including the Des Moines Metro, 
Ames, and Webster City over to rain by mid-morning. The wintry 
mix will persist however for northern and northwest Iowa through 
the day. Travel difficulties will continue for areas where
freezing rain persists today.

By late afternoon and evening, much colder air will change 
precipitation quickly over to snow from west to east across
central Iowa. Snow will become heavy at times this evening with
rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour likely from Omaha to Fort Dodge to
Webster City. Total snowfall of 6 to 10 inches likely along this
axis of heaviest snow. Strong winds will accompany the heavy snow
producing blizzard conditions. Snow amounts are expected to be
lighter south of this heavier axis, with generally 2 to 5 inches
expected from 2 to 5 inches from Waterloo to Des Moines towards SW
Iowa. Even so the combination of snow and very strong winds will
make travel difficult tonight. Although snow ends, winds will
continue to impact travel on Sunday.

west central Iowa combining with slick roads to produce hazardous 
travel with limited visibility.

By late afternoon and evening the situation will change fairly
quickly as colder air will change precipitation quickly over to 
snow from west to east across central Iowa. Snow will become heavy
at times this evening with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour likely
from Omaha to Fort Dodge to Webster City. Total snowfall of 6 to 
10 inches is likely along this axis of heaviest snow. Strong 
winds will accompany the heavy snow producing blizzard conditions.
Snow amounts are expected to be lighter south of this heavier 
axis, with generally 2 to 5 inches expected from 2 to 5 inches 
from Waterloo to Des Moines towards SW Iowa. Even so the 
combination of snow and very strong winds will make travel 
difficult tonight. Although snow ends, winds will continue to 
impact travel on Sunday.

There remains some uncertainty as to where the heaviest snow band
will set up Saturday afternoon and evening as the main storm
crosses Iowa. A small shift in the track of the storm will
greatly impact snow amounts and the extent of blizzard conditions
over the region tonight.

Carroll north and east through Fort Dodge, Algona and Mason City
where eight to twelve inches may fall. One to three tiers of
counties either side of these areas confidence is lower due to a 
sharp gradient in expected snowfall where amounts could
potentially vary one to four inches just across one county.
However note that regardless of how much snow falls, wind gusts of
35 to 50 mph are anticipated later tonight into Sunday producing

the area. However, some patchy blowing snow continues over the 
north and some highways and interstates remain closed overnight as
clean up from yesterdays blizzard impacts continues. Most local
