...Dangerous Currents for Poor to Average Swimmers Will Continue
through Memorial Day...

.Persistent moderate to strong southeast flow between stationary
high pressure over the northern Gulf and low pressure over the
Sierra Madre will continue to push moderate southeast swells and
generate choppy surf waves of 3 to 5 feet through Memorial Day. A
combination of south to north longshore currents with some
embedded rip currents will make the surf difficult and
potentially life threatening for poor to average swimmers.

...MODERATE RIP AND LONGSHORE CURRENT RISK IN EFFECT FROM 7 AM
CDT THIS MORNING THROUGH MONDAY EVENING...

The National Weather Service in Brownsville has issued a Longshore
and Rip Current Risk, which is in effect from 7 AM CDT this
morning through Monday evening.

* TIMING...Sunday morning through Monday evening.

* IMPACTS...South to north longshore currents with a few embedded
rip currents will be dangerous for poor to average swimmers and
could become life threatening without the correct precautions.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

There is a moderate risk of longshore and embedded rip currents
with large seasonal crowds at the beach...with many expected to
venture into the surf to cool off from the hot sunshine.

South to north longshore currents a channels of water that can
quickly move unprepared swimmers rapidly up the beach, well away
from their starting location. The shape of the surf zone can push
swimmers both up the beach and farther out, making it more
difficult to navigate back to shore.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. A few rip currents may become embedded in the
south to north dominant flow.

Heed the advice of lifeguards...beach patrol flags and signs.
for both types of currents.

Longshore currents are expected to dominate the surf flow through
Memorial Day. Poor to average swimmers should remain in water
waist deep or less to prevent the current from pushing up the
beach without the ability to feel the sand. If caught in a
longshore current, wave and yell for help. If at all possible,
attempt to swim back toward shore. Do not attempt to swim directly
against the current as you will tire quickly.

All swimmers should bring a flotation device into the water. These
include boogie boards with rope and life jackets or vests.
