* Flash Flood Warning for...
West central Garfield County in southern Utah...
Specifically for Red Canyon
* Until 400 PM MDT
* At 1257 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated a thunderstorm producing
heavy rain over Red Canyon. Radar estimates of .50 inches of rain
have fallen in the last 20 minutes. Additional heavy rainfall is
expected over the next hour. Flash flooding is expected to begin
shortly.
* Stay out of normally dry washes in the Red Canyon area. Campers in
the area should move to higher ground immediately.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain. Dry
washes, streams, and rivers can become raging killer currents in a
matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall.
Flooding is occurring or is imminent. It is important to know where
you are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks which can become
killers in heavy rains. Campers and hikers should avoid streams or
creeks.

Specifically for Red Canyon At 118 PM MDT, trained weather spotters at the USFS Red Canyon Visitor Center reported flash flooding in Red Canyon, with a mud slide covering half of the parking lot. 1 to 1.25 inches of rain has fallen in the last 45 min, and additional heavy rain is expected over the next hour. If in the Red Canyon area, move to higher ground immediately! Flash flooding and mud slides will continue to occur through mid afternoon. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... At 228 PM MDT, USFS employees at the Red Canyon Visitor Center have indicated that flash flooding continues in all major washes in the canyon. UDOT has reported that SR 12 remains closed through Red Canyon, as multiple mud slides have crossed the road. 2 cars were trapped between slides, but all occupants were able to escape with no injuries. Radar estimates of 1-2 inches of rain fell within a 1 hour period earlier this afternoon, but rainfall has since ended. Ongoing flash flooding within the main channels will only gradually recede through 4 pm MDT. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately.
