The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a High Rip Current Risk, which is in effect through this evening. * TIMING...The threat for strong rip currents will be present all day, however the risk will be highest during the afternoon due to tidal effects. * IMPACTS...Rip currents will be dangerous and life threatening today! Numerous water rescues have occurred over the past several days, with even stronger rip current conditions expected today! PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... There is a high risk of rip currents. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards...beach patrol flags and signs. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. The large and battering waves will make entering the surf hazardous for beach goers tonight and Thursday. The risk of strong rip currents will also continue into late week. * TIMING...The threat for strong rip currents will be present all day, however the risk will be highest during the afternoon due to tidal effects. High surf is expected by this evening through Thursday at east central Florida beaches. * IMPACTS...Rip currents will be dangerous and life threatening today! Numerous water rescues have occurred over the past several days, with even stronger rip current conditions expected today! Building surf this evening into Thursday will be hazardous to beach goers. The large waves can knock you down and make you susceptible to being caught in a rip current. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... There is a high risk of rip currents. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and piers.
