...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a High Rip
Current Risk, which is in effect through this evening. Over 400
people have been rescued from Rip Currents at the Volusia County
beaches since early last week. Lingering swells will keep this
threat in place today.

* TIMING...The threat for dangerous rip currents will be present
all day, however the risk will be particularly high from about
130 PM through 730 PM, surrounding the time of low tide.

* IMPACTS...Rip currents will be dangerous and life threatening.
Numerous water rescues have occurred over the past several days,
with similar strong rip current conditions expected today.
  Always swim near a lifeguard!

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and
piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards...beach patrol flags and
signs.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.
