224 WHUS42 KILM 080858 CFWILM Coastal Hazard Message National Weather Service Wilmington NC 458 AM EDT Mon Oct 8 2018 NCZ107-081500- /O.CON.KILM.CF.Y.0078.181008T1200Z-181008T1500Z/ Inland New Hanover- 458 AM EDT Mon Oct 8 2018 ...COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 8 AM TO 11 AM EDT THIS MORNING... * Location...the Lower Cape Fear River from downtown Wilmington southward to the mouth of the Cape Fear River. * Coastal Flooding...high tide will combine with the receding flood waters upstream, to create minor flooding across low lying locations along the lower Cape Fear River this afternoon. * Timing...the highest waters levels will occur around 940 AM this morning. The potential for minor coastal flooding will occur within a couple of hours surrounding the high tide. * Impacts...water will cover portions of local roadways including Water Street of downtown Wilmington, roads in and near the State Port and portions of River Road south of Downtown Wilmington. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Strong easterly winds at 15 to 20 mph with higher gusts will produce a strong longshore current for the south-facing beaches of Brunswick County. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into rip currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous areas. Often, if the longshore current is strong enough, it will sweep swimmers off their feet, making it difficult to return to shore. A Beach Hazards Statement is issued when threats such as rip currents, longshore currents, and other hazards create life- threatening conditions in the surf zone.
