...Increased Northwest Flow Monday and Monday Night...

.A prevailing southerly wind through this evening turn northwesterly 
with a cold frontal passage late tonight into Monday morning. A 
fresh surge of colder air in the wake of this front will lead to 
gusty northwest conditions Monday afternoon through early Monday 
night. During this time frame, gale force wind gusts can be expected 
over the open waters of Lake Huron. A Gale Warning will be issued 
for the open waters with Small Craft Advisories for adjacent near 
shore waters where gusts will hold more in the 25 to 30 knot area.

Winds briefly ease late Monday night before strengthening again from 
the southwest during the day Tuesday. A period of gale force wind 
gusts will be possible again within this southwest flow. Winds will 
then veer to northwest again Tuesday night into Wednesday as another 
cold front pushes through the area Tuesday evening. Wind gusts will 
remain elevated in this renewed period of northwest flow with gusts 
over the open waters reaching at least 30 knots at times.

...NORTHWEST GALES TODAY FOLLOWED BY SOUTHWEST GALES TUESDAY...

.An active period of marine wind and wave conditions is set to unfold 
through mid week as two main low pressure systems and associated 
fronts affect the central Great Lakes. The first is a cold front 
moving through early today which brings gusty northwest wind to all 
marine areas. A Gale Warning remains in effect for the open waters 
of Lake Huron north of Harbor Beach and a Small Craft Advisory 
remains in effect for all other marine areas.

A diminishing trend of only a few hours occurs overnight as the next 
low pressure system approaches the northern Great Lakes. Northwest 
wind quickly backs to southwest and strengthens rapidly to gales 
again by early Tuesday morning. The cold air mass remains in 
residence during this time and maintains an unstable thermal profile 
over Lake Huron and Saginaw Bay as the wind ramps up. Southwest wind 
gusts of 35 to 40 knots are likely again across the open waters of 
Lake Huron north of Harbor Beach but also including Saginaw Bay. The 
Gale Warning is therefore extended through Tuesday for Lake Huron 
and transitions from a Small Craft Advisory tonight to a Gale 
Warning Tuesday for Saginaw Bay. The associated cold front moves 
through the central Great Lakes Tuesday night with northwest wind 
gusting mainly around 30 knots with a few gusts to marginal gales 
possible over central Lake Huron through Wednesday.

...Gusts to gales through Tuesday...

.Post frontal westerly winds gusts will top out around 35 knot gales 
across much of Lake Huron late this afternoon and early this evening 
within strong post frontal cold air advection. There will be an 
overall weakening trend to the winds overnight as the gradient 
relaxes and the cold air advection eases. 

Another cold front will approach the Great Lakes from the west 
Tuesday morning. The result will be a backing of the winds to the 
southwest. Ample low level cold air will support decent over-lake 
mixing depths so that wind speeds will increase. There is reasonably 
high confidence that gusts will once again top 35 knots gales on 
Lake Huron, with the strongest winds expected across Saginaw Bay out 
into the middle of Lake Huron. The cold front will traverse Lake 
Huron Tues afternoon and evening, resulting in a veering of the 
winds to the west-northwest. The front will mark another push of 
cold air, keeping winds elevated through the day Wednesday. There is 
actually another chance for gale force gusts on the open waters of 
Lake Huron Wednesday. A fairly active weather pattern in terms of 
wind speeds will persist across the lakes well into the weekend as 
yet another strong cold front is forecast to impact the area Friday 
night.

  above the critical mark. 

* WIND AND WAVES: During the Small Craft Advisory, expect

...Gusts to gales through Tuesday...

.Post frontal westerly winds gusts will top out around 35 knot gales 
across much of Lake Huron through early tonight within strong 
post frontal cold air advection. There will then be a brief 
weakening trend Tuesday morning as the gradient relaxes and the 
cold air advection eases. 

Another cold front will approach the Great Lakes from the west 
Tuesday morning. The result will be a backing of the winds to the 
southwest. Ample low level cold air will support decent over-lake 
mixing depths so that wind speeds will increase. There is reasonably 
high confidence that gusts will once again top 35 knots gales on 
Lake Huron, with the strongest winds expected across Saginaw Bay out 
into the middle of Lake Huron. The cold front will traverse Lake 
Huron Tues afternoon and evening, resulting in a veering of the 
winds to the west-northwest. The front will mark another push of 
cold air, keeping winds elevated through the day Wednesday. There is 
actually another chance for gale force gusts on the open waters of 
Lake Huron Wednesday. A fairly active weather pattern in terms of 
wind speeds will persist across the lakes well into the weekend as 
yet another strong cold front is forecast to impact the area Friday 
night.

...SOUTHWEST GALES TODAY AND NORTHWEST GALES POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY...

.Northwest gales over the open waters of Lake Huron have settled down 
to around 30 knots during the early morning. The wind will now shift 
southwest and increase again into the 35 to 40 knot gale range 
through today affecting mainly Saginaw Bay along with central and 
northern Lake Huron. Gale Warnings remain in effect through this 
evening for Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron north of Harbor Beach. Small 
Craft Advisories remain in effect for all other marine areas through 
western Lake Erie. 

Gales subside to gusts around 30 knots by mid evening through the 
overnight as the pressure gradient relaxes in the vicinity of the 
cold front moving through the central Great Lakes. However, wind 
veers and strengthens Wednesday with northwest gales possible 
once again. Given the lengthy break tonight, and some uncertainty 
on timing and magnitude Wednesday, a Gale Watch has been issued 
for central and northern Lake Huron for Wednesday into Wednesday 
evening. High pressure then builds into the Ohio valley and 
southern Great Lakes for a short time through Thursday before the 
active weather pattern resumes with another strong cold front 
Friday night.

...NORTHWEST GALES CONTINUE TODAY...

.Northwest wind trailing the early morning front has gusts to 
marginal gales over the open waters of Lake Huron during the morning 
followed by an uptick in the gradient that pushes gusts more firmly 
back into gales during afternoon into this evening. Gale Warnings 
remain in effect through this evening for all but the far south end 
of Lake Huron. Small Craft Advisories remain in effect for all other 
marine areas through western Lake Erie. 

Northwest gales subside to gusts around 30 knots by mid evening 
through tonight while direction backs to southwest Thursday as high 
pressure builds from the Midwest into the Ohio valley. There is not

Small Craft Advisory which is in effect until 10 PM EDT this
evening. 

* WIND AND WAVES: During the Small Craft Advisory, expect
  sustained winds up to 21 knots from the northwest with gusts up
  to 29 knots. The largest expected significant waves will be 3
  feet with a potential maximum wave height of 5 feet. 

* TIMING: The maximum winds are expected around 1 PM EDT Wednesday
  with the largest waves expected around 3 PM EDT Wednesday.
