The swells will result in high waves in the surf zone especially near the South Padre Island Jetties. The wave to peak this afternoon around high tides followed by a slow downward trend late tonight and Thursday as a cold front moves offshore. The National Weather Service in Brownsville has issued a High Surf Advisory, which is in effect until 9 PM CDT this evening. A High Rip Current Risk has also been issued. This High Rip Current Risk is in effect until 9 PM CDT this evening. * WAVES AND SURF...6 to 10 feet. * TIMING...through 9 pm tonight. * IMPACTS...Large waves breaking near the shoreline with some wave washing over portions of the South Padre Island Jetties. Some overwash of tides during high tide (4 pm) sending water near the dune line. Strong and potentially life threatening rip currents and large surf are likely along area beaches. Rip currents and pounding rough can be hazardous and life threatening to even experienced swimmers. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area...producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions. There is a high risk of rip currents. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins... jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards...beach patrol flags and signs. If you become caught in a rip current...yell for help. Remain calm...do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for help.
