THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MELBOURNE HAS ISSUED A BEACH
HAZARDS STATEMENT FOR ROUGH SURF, WHICH IS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS
AFTERNOON. 

* HAZARDS...BREEZY NORTHERLY WINDS WILL PRODUCE ROUGH SURF AND A
  SOUTHWARD FLOWING CURRENT ALONG THE BEACHES TODAY. 

* POTENTIAL IMPACTS...HEAVY BREAKING WAVES POUNDING THE BEACHES
  AND A SOUTHWARD FLOWING CURRENT NEAR THE SHORE WILL CREATE
  HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS IN THE SURF ZONE. STRONG RIP CURRENTS WILL
  ALSO OCCUR NEAR PIERS...JETTIES AND REEFS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IS ISSUED WHEN THREATS SUCH AS ROUGH
SURF AND LONGSHORE CURRENTS CREATE LIFE-THREATENING CONDITIONS IN
THE SURF ZONE.

LONGSHORE CURRENTS COMMONLY OCCUR WHEN WAVES APPROACH THE SHORELINE
AT AN ANGLE. THEY OFTEN PRODUCE RIP CURRENTS NEAR JETTIES...PIERS
AND REEFS. LONGSHORE CURRENTS CAN ALSO KNOCK YOU OFF A SANDBAR 
INTO DEEPER WATER. THE BEST SAFETY ADVICE IS TO ONLY ENTER THE 
SURF NEAR A LIFEGUARD.
