THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MELBOURNE HAS ISSUED A BEACH
HAZARDS STATEMENT FOR ROUGH SURF, WHICH IS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS
AFTERNOON.

* HAZARDS...BREEZY NORTHEAST WINDS WILL PRODUCE ROUGH SURF AND A 
  SOUTHWARD FLOWING CURRENT ALONG THE BEACHES TODAY. 

* TIMING...EXPECT ROUGH SURF THROUGH THE DAY. 

* LOCATION...ALONG THE BEACHES OF VOLUSIA, BREVARD, INDIAN RIVER,
  SAINT LUCIE, AND MARTIN COUNTIES. 

* POTENTIAL IMPACTS...THE ROUGH SURF AND SOUTHWARD FLOWING
  LONGSHORE CURRENT WILL MAKE ENTERING THE WATER DANGEROUS,
  ESPECIALLY NEAR PIERS AND JETTIES WHERE SEAWARD FLOWING RIP
  CURRENTS MAY BE STRONG. HEAVY BREAKING WAVES CAN KNOCK YOU OFF A
  SANDBAR INTO DEEPER WATER OR INTO STRONG CURRENTS. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

IF YOU CHOOSE TO ENTER THE WATER, ONLY DO SO NEAR A LIFEGUARD. 
SWIM NEAR A LIFEGUARD. IF CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT, RELAX AND 
FLOAT. DON'T SWIM AGAINST THE CURRENT. IF ABLE, SWIM IN A 
DIRECTION FOLLOWING THE SHORELINE. IF UNABLE TO ESCAPE, FACE THE 
SHORE AND CALL OR WAVE FOR HELP.
