The National Weather Service in La Crosse has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
  Clayton County in northeastern Iowa...
  Fayette County in northeastern Iowa...

* Until 845 PM CDT

* At 550 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing
  heavy rain across the warned area. Up to two inches of rain have 
  already fallen. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly. Otter 
  Creek in parts of Fayette County Iowa is already flooding.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
  West Union, Guttenberg, Elkader, Fayette, McGregor, Garnavillo,
  Elgin, Clermont, Maynard, Hawkeye, Arlington, Farmersburg, Waucoma,
  Volga, Wadena, Westgate, St. Olaf, Garber, Randalia and Clayton.

...THE FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 845 PM CDT FOR
CLAYTON AND FAYETTE COUNTIES...

Intense thunderstorms dropped 2 to 3 inches of rain across parts of 
northeast Iowa this afternoon. Many area creeks and flowages into 
the Turkey River basin are rising quickly or already in flood.

If you encounter flooded roads, DO NOT drive into the water. Find a 
safer route. Find a different route. 

Water levels along the Turkey and Volga Rivers will be rising 
quickly over the next 24 hours.

...THE FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 845 PM CDT FOR
CLAYTON AND FAYETTE COUNTIES...

At 705 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated that the rain has ended 
across much of Fayette and Clayton counties. However, the storms had 
produced 1 to 3 inches of rain with locally higher amounts. This has 
resulted in significant rises on smaller streams that flow into the 
Turkey River, such as Otter Creek. Locations near these streams are 
expected to experience flooding.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, country roads, farmland, and other low lying
spots.

CLAYTON AND FAYETTE COUNTIES...

While the heavy rain has exited the area, 2 to 3 inches of rain from 
earlier has led to flash flooding and significant rises on area 
creeks and streams.  The Turkey River is also rising quickly.

Some of the drainage areas may start to recede this evening but if 
you encounter flood waters, find a different route. Do not drive 
into the high water. Road ways may be damaged.

deaths occur in vehicles.
