LUCIE-MARTIN- COASTAL VOLUSIA COUNTY-NORTHERN BREVARD COUNTY- 350 AM EST MON NOV 7 2016 ...BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MELBOURNE HAS ISSUED A BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT FOR DANGEROUS ROUGH SURF AND RIP CURRENTS...WHICH IS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING. * HAZARDS...A LONG FETCH OF NORTHEAST WINDS AROUND 20 MPH WILL PRODUCE MODERATE TO LARGE BREAKING WAVES AND DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS. * TIMING...THE SURF ZONE WILL BE ROUGH ALL DAY AND THE GREATEST RISK OF RIP CURRENTS WILL BE EARLY THIS MORNING AND LATE THIS AFTERNOON. * POTENTIAL IMPACTS...LARGE BREAKING WAVES UP TO 5 FEET AND STRONG NORTHEAST WINDS WILL LEAD TO ROUGH SURF ALONG THE COAST. THE WAVES CAN KNOCK YOU DOWN AND MAKE YOU VULNERABLE TO SEAWARD FLOWING RIP CURRENTS. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... ROUGH SURF CAN OFTEN BE MORE DANGEROUS THAN IT APPEARS WHILE STANDING ON THE BEACH. BREAKING WAVES ARE HEAVY AND CAN KNOCK YOU OFF A SANDBAR INTO DEEPER WATER...OR INTO LONGSHORE CURRENTS AND RIP CURRENTS. THE BEST SAFETY ADVICE IS TO ONLY ENTER THE SURF NEAR A LIFEGUARD. IF CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT TRY TO REMAIN CALM AND FLOAT. DON'T FIGHT THE CURRENT. SWIM IN A DIRECTION FOLLOWING THE SHORELINE. IF UNABLE TO ESCAPE...FACE THE SHORE AND CALL OR WAVE FOR HELP. IF TIRED, FLOAT OR TREAD WATER UNTIL OUT OF THE RIP CURRENT. && $$
