...BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MELBOURNE HAS ISSUED A BEACH
HAZARDS STATEMENT FOR ROUGH SURF AND RIP CURRENTS...WHICH IS IN
EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING.

* HAZARDS...STRONG NORTHEAST WINDS WILL PRODUCE ROUGH SURF AND THE
POTENTIAL FOR MINOR BEACH EROSION AROUND TIMES OF HIGH TIDE.
DANGEROUS BREAKERS AND STRONG RIP CURRENTS WILL EXIST IN THE
  SURF ZONE.

* TIMING...THE POTENTIAL FOR WAVE RUNUP AND MINOR BEACH EROSION
WILL BE GREATEST A FEW HOURS EITHER SIDE OF HIGH TIDE WHICH WILL
OCCUR JUST AFTER NOON TODAY. DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS ARE POSSIBLE
  THROUGH INTO THIS EVENING.

* LOCATION...THE BEACHES OF VOLUSIA, BREVARD, INDIAN RIVER, SAINT
  LUCIE, AND MARTIN COUNTIES.

* POTENTIAL IMPACTS...LARGE BREAKING WAVES BETWEEN 4 TO 6 FEET AND
STRONG NORTHEAST WINDS WILL LEAD TO ROUGH SURF ALONG THE COAST.
WAVE RUNUP TO THE BASE OF DUNES IS EXPECTED AT SOME BEACHES NEAR
HIGH TIDE, LEADING TO MINOR BEACH EROSION ESPECIALLY IN MORE
VULNERABLE LOCATIONS ALONG THE EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA COASTLINE.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

ROUGH SURF CAN OFTEN BE MORE DANGEROUS THAN IT APPEARS WHILE
STANDING ON THE BEACH. HEAVY BREAKING WAVES CAN KNOCK YOU OFF A
SANDBAR INTO DEEPER WATER OR INTO A RIP CURRENT. IF CAUGHT IN A
RIP CURRENT REMAIN CALM. DON'T FIGHT THE CURRENT. SWIM IN A
DIRECTION FOLLOWING THE SHORELINE. IF UNABLE TO ESCAPE...FACE THE
SHORE AND CALL OR WAVE FOR HELP. IF TIRED, FLOAT OR TREAD WATER
UNTIL OUT OF THE RIP CURRENT.
