THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MELBOURNE HAS ISSUED A BEACH
HAZARDS STATEMENT FOR ROUGH SURF AND LIFE THREATENING RIP
CURRENTS...WHICH IS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING.

* HAZARDS...ROUGH SURF AND MODERATE RISK FOR RIP CURRENTS.

* TIMING...ROUGH SURF WILL OCCUR...ESPECIALLY INTO THE LATE
  MORNING AND AFTERNOON. THE GREATEST SEAWARD PULL FROM RIP
  CURRENTS SHOULD BE ABOUT 3 HOURS EITHER SIDE OF LOW
  TIDE...AROUND 11 AM.

* POTENTIAL IMPACTS...ROUGH SURF AND RIP CURRENTS WILL CAUSE
  HAZARDOUS SWIMMING CONDITIONS AT EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA BEACHES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IS ISSUED WHEN THREATS SUCH AS ROUGH
SURF...RIP CURRENTS AND OTHER HAZARDS CREATE LIFE-THREATENING
CONDITIONS IN THE SURF ZONE. CAUTION SHOULD BE USED WHEN IN OR
NEAR THE WATER.

THE BEST SAFETY ADVICE IS TO ONLY ENTER THE SURF NEAR A LIFEGUARD.
ROUGH SURF CAN OFTEN BE MUCH MORE DANGEROUS THAN IT APPEARS
WHILE STANDING ON THE BEACH. HEAVY BREAKING WAVES CAN KNOCK YOU
OFF A SANDBAR INTO DEEPER WATER. 

IF YOU BECOME CAUGHT IN A CURRENT...NEVER ATTEMPT TO SWIM
DIRECTLY AGAINST IT...AS YOU WILL TIRE QUICKLY. INSTEAD...TREAD
WATER AND SWIM AT AN ANGLE AWAY FROM THE CURRENT. THEN ONCE OUT OF
THE CURRENT...SWIM DIRECTLY BACK TOWARD THE BEACH.
