...BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IN EFFECT FROM 8 AM EDT THIS MORNING
THROUGH THIS EVENING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MELBOURNE HAS ISSUED A BEACH
HAZARDS STATEMENT FOR LONGSHORE CURRENTS...WHICH IS IN EFFECT
FROM 8 AM EDT THIS MORNING THROUGH THIS EVENING.

* HAZARDS...A SOUTHWARD FLOWING LONGSHORE CURRENT WILL OCCUR AT
AREA BEACHES. LIFE THREATENING RIP CURRENTS WILL ALSO OCCUR
  ESPECIALLY NEAR PIERS AND JETTIES.

* TIMING...GREATEST LONGSHORE CURRENT THIS MORNING THEN WINDS EASE
BUT THREAT OF RIP CURRENTS WILL EXTEND THROUGH AFTERNOON.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
LONGSHORE CURRENTS COMMONLY OCCUR WHEN WAVES APPROACH THE
SHORELINE AT AN ANGLE. THEY CAN PRODUCE RIP CURRENTS NEAR A JETTY
OR PIER AND KNOCK YOU OFF A SANDBAR INTO DEEPER WATER. THE BEST
SAFETY ADVICE IS TO ONLY ENTER THE SURF NEAR A LIFEGUARD. BUT IF
YOU BECOME CAUGHT IN A CURRENT...NEVER ATTEMPT TO SWIM DIRECTLY
AGAINST IT...AS YOU WILL TIRE QUICKLY. INSTEAD...TREAD WATER AND
SWIM AT AN ANGLE AWAY FROM THE CURRENT. THEN ONCE OUT OF THE
CURRENT...SWIM DIRECTLY BACK TOWARD THE BEACH.
